John Farrell is the current Governor of Wheatfield Prison, and formerly Portlaoise Prison, the only High Security facility in the state. John has been in the IPS for 29 years having joined as a prison officer in 1991 in Mountjoy. Rising though the ranks and moving across prisons from Mountjoy, Clovehill, Wheatfield and Portlaoise. He also held the Governor 1 position in IPS HQ which has strategy and policy oversight for all prisoner escorts, the IPS Operational Support Unit and was the IPS Designate Complaints Officer.
Currently filling joint roles of prison Governance and as operational lead on the IPS Covid19 Emergency Response Planning Team.John was educated to Masters level in Business Practice, MBS at the IMI and also holds Diplomas in HR and Line management. He Holds an EQA in Executive Coaching and is a former member of the Association for Coaching and European Mentoring & Coaching Council.
